Our Story
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Lisa Maldives Private Limited (LISA) is a company registered in the Republic of Maldives to engage, amongst others, in the business of manufacturing environment friendly bags in the Maldives. Since 2005, LISA has been in the business of importation and distribution of single-use polythene bags to the Maldives. In 2006, LISA started manufacturing single-use polythene bags when the socio-economic benefits of making these products locally were realized. The initial factory set-up established in the center of Male’ City was later relocated to Hulhumale’ industrial area in 2007. LISA has always adhered to the laws, regulations, or policies of the Republic of Maldives.
From the very beginning of its manufacturing operations, LISA has made its regulatory and environmental obligations a top priority. LISA’s primary aim was to make all its products and activities as environmentally friendly as possible, and the company has explored all avenues for reducing, reusing, and recycling the plastic waste from its operations. In fact, by its second year, LISA was recycling all the plastic waste from its manufacturing operations on site.
BECOMING TE SOLE LICENSED CONSULTANT OF EPI CANADA IN MALDIVES
To mitigate the environmental impacts and support the government’s initiative in reducing the use of non-biodegradable polythene bags in the Maldives, LISA changed all its polythene bags into oxo-degradable products in 2010. Oxo-degradable technology of plastics was designed and developed by Environmental Products Inc. (EPI) to limit the lifespan of plastics. Although it was an expensive transformation, LISA complied with the directives received from MEE and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), bringing in all the necessary changes to the factory, machinery, and the raw materials used. LISA subsequently became the only licensed consultant of EPI Canada in the Maldives.

BECOMING MORE ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY BY RECYCLING
To offset the direct losses encountered from the transformation into fully oxo degradable products, LISA invested in additional state-of-the art recycling machinery to add to the production line. As the factory space became too limited for both manufacturing and recycling to be carried out comfortably, a separate land was leased, and all recycling operations moved to the new site in 2015. In addition to recycling the plastic waste from its own operations, LISA buys waste material from other manufacturers in the Maldives. LISA also collects the rejected polythene products from ENSIS Fisheries Maldives which would otherwise go to the landfill.
99.9% Of Elite Plastics Production Waste Is Internally Recycled & Re-Extruded To Produce Cost Effective High Quality Recycled Films, Bags & Covers That Help Significantly Reduce Our Carbon Footprint
LISA is committed to continue making positive environmental changes and stands ready to contribute in every way possible to improve the environmental condition of the Maldives. For over a decade, LISA has invested more than MVR 25 million to make the company socio-economically sound, environmentally friendly, and ethically acceptable. As already noted, LISA has always complied fully, and never violated or contravened any laws, regulations, or policies of the Maldives from its inception to date. The Ministry of Economic Development has appreciated the positive role of small and medium enterprises in the socio-economic development of the country; we believe LISA as an SME has contributed positively to the country’s GDP and has taken all approaches to make the business socio-economically beneficial to the local community. As further proof of that, LISA has taken an active role in various CSR events over the years.
When LISA’s manufacturing operations began, few other companies were manufacturing single use polythene bags in the Maldives, mostly food grade bakery bags for their own use. Today, we cater to small, medium, and large businesses throughout the Maldives including resort islands. Our coverage in the Maldives is roughly about 80 percent.
BROADENING HORIZONS
To broaden our trade and business services LISA opened its first outlet, STS Traders, in Male’ in the year 2012. Apart from the wholesale business of oxo-biodegradable polythene bags, STS introduces new imported products to the Maldivian market. We were a tiny player looking for a way to differentiate ourselves — to serve the customers better than the big competitors did. We hired smart people who were deeply committed to serving customers. We began to identify customer demands through customer feedbacks. In the following years we have started a new business, Turbo Zone, in Hulhumale’. The main focus of Turbo Zone’s business is supplying motor parts to cater to the rising demands of motorvehicle drivers and riders.
To meet customers demands, we opened our mechanical garage, Hulhumale’ Automobile Service in 2018. Today, Turbo Zone and Hulhumale’ Automobile Services are the leading service providers in their respective fields.
